WILLIAM RICHARD SIMMONS 90, a lifelong resident of the Richmond/Lenox area died Monday, January 29, 2007 in Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. Mr. Simmons was born March 4, 1916 in Columbus Township, Michigan to the late, Earl and Gladys (Crawford) Simmons. He married Eleanor Hingtgen in Moline, IL.on June 14, 1942. Mrs. Simmons died February 3, 1997. Bill graduated from Richmond High School in 1934. He was the first man drafted from the Richmond area and was a sergeant in the infantry during World War II serving in Africa, Philippine's and Korea. He was discharged in 1946 and then served as a Master Sergeant in the National Guard from 1946 until 1949. He retired in 1976 after thirty years as a rural mail carrier in Richmond and Lenox Township. He was a life member of the Rural Mail Carriers Assoc. and the James Coleman VFW Post in Richmond. Bill and his wife were also the owners and operators of Simmons Saddlery and Horse Farm in Lenox from 1966 to 2001. He is survived by his nephews, Kenneth and Sue Simmons of Richmond, Donald and Irene Simmons of Lenox, Ronald Simmons of Vista, CA., nieces, Joyce Sobkowski of Fort Gratiot and Janet McIntire of Sterling Heights. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by his siblings, Donald and Kenneth Simmons and Frances Smith. A funeral service will be Friday, February 2, 2007 at 10:30 am in Rewalt Funeral Home, Richmond. Reverend Gerhardt Doroh, pastor of St. Peter's Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in Kittridge Cemetery. Visiting will be on Thursday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9p.m. and Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
