Erwin Bauer Obituary

REVEREND ERWIN J. BAUER age 93 of Brighton, formerly of Columbus Township died Sunday, April 19, 2015 in the Caretel Inns of Brighton. Father Bauer was born August 7, 1921 in Redford to the late Erwin and Mabel (Salley) Bauer. He attended both St. Mary's Grade and High School. He entered Sacred Heart Seminary High School in September 1937 and earned his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy at Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit in June of 1944. He received his Theology degree from St. Mary's of the West Seminary in Norwood, Ohio and was ordained at the Blessed Sacrament Cathedral on May 31, 1947 by the late Edward Cardinal Mooney. He celebrated his First Mass at St. Mary of Redford on June 1, 1947.
Father served as Chaplain C.Y.O. summer camps and Assistant at St. Vincent in Detroit June to October 1947, Assistant of Sacred Heart in Dearborn from Oct 1947 to June 1952, Assistant at St. Gregory in Detroit from June 1952 to June 1956, Assistant at St. Agatha in Redford Twp from June 1956 to February 1961, Assistant at St. Mary in New Baltimore and St. Frances Mission in New Haven from February 1961 to June 1963, Assistant at Assumption Grotto in Detroit from June 1963 to June 1965, Founding Pastor of newly established St. Donald Parish in Roseville from June 1965 to June 1978, Pastor at St. Mary Mystical Rose in Armada from June 1978 to March 1983, Pastor at St. Hubert in Mt. Clemens from March 1983 to July 1985 ,Pastor at St. Barnabas in Eastpointe from July 1985 to June 1987, Pastor at St. Philip Neri, Columbus Twp and Holy Rosary Mission, Smiths Creek from July 1987 to June 1991, took Senior Priest Status on July 1, 1991. Served as Administrator at St Mark Parish in Harsens Island from July 1991 to December 1993, Administrator at St. Catherine in Algonac from July 1994 to September 1994, Administrator at St. Mark Parish on Harsens Island April 1997 to October 1997, Administrator at St. Barnabas in Eastpointe from June 2000 to October 2000 and Pastor at St. Phillip Neri in Columbus Twp and Holy Rosary Mission in Smith Creek from June 2001 to June 2003. Other assignments included; Parochial School Athletic Board from 1949 to 1963, Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Youth from 1954 to 1956, Spiritual Director, Northern Deanery for 1956 to 1961, Teacher at Sty. Mary's High School in New Baltimore from 1961 to 1963, Marriage Counseling, Family Life clinic, Archdiocese of Detroit 1964 to 1965, Vicar of SERF Vicariate 1972, Vicar of THUMB Vicariate 1979, Vicar of THUMB Vicariate 1982 and Vicar of North Macomb Vicariate in 1984. His other interests included preparing liturgies, working with the "Small Fries" sports, (avid Detroit Tigers fan), traveling, bingo and going to casinos (and not necessarily in that exact order!)
Father is survived by his sister-in-law Mary (Kitty) Bauer of Pinckney, MI and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his younger brothers, William Bauer of Livonia and Richard Bauer of Pinckney and younger sister, Sally O'Neil of Harsens Island. A funeral Mass will be on Thursday, April 23, 2015 at 12 o'clock noon at Holy Family Parish, St. Philip Neri Church. Archbishop Allen Vigneron will officiate. Burial will be in Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Southfield. Visiting will be on Wednesday from 3 to 8pm and Thursday from 11:00am to the time of Mass in the church.
